RANAMOK GLASS PRIZE TO CLOSE AFTER 20 YEARS

The founders of the Ranamok Glass Prize, Maureen Cahill and Andy Plummer, have decided to bring an end to the Prize following its upcoming 2014 exhibition and tour. The closure will mark 20 years of operations for Ranamok.

In a joint statement, Cahill and Plummer said, "Since its founding in 1994, Ranamok has become an internationally renowned showcase for Contemporary Glass from Australia and New Zealand. We are very proud of what we have created and believe that we have made a real difference in the cultural scene."

Their decision to close Ranamok has been supported by Ranamok's Board of Directors.

From its inception in 1994, Ranamok has been a major promotor of contemporary glass in Australia and New Zealand. To this end, nearly $3,000,000 has been raised from corporate sponsors and private benefactors over the past 20 years. These funds have been employed to promote, exhibit and tour over 600 works by Australian and New Zealand glass artists. Over these 20 years, Ranamok finalists have been the beneficiaries of around $750,000 that has been generated from the cash award as well as net receipts from the sale of their exhibited works. Thousands of people have been exposed to Ranamok finalists through its association with the City of Sydney's Art & About festival, it's annual touring schedule and the production of its catalogue and website.

In early 2015, following the end of the 2014 tour, Ranamok Glass Prize Ltd will be wound up. All of its assets, including the 20 piece Ranamok Winners Collection, will be donated to an appropriate not-for-profit entity. At this point, that entity has not yet been identified.

2013 RANAMOK GLASS PRIZE WINNER

The 2013 Ranamok Glass Prize has been awarded to Tom Moore for his entry
Massive Microscopic Bud
.

Photographer: Grant Hancock

Judges comments:

“Tom Moore’s Massive Microscopic Bud exemplifies a major effort in his ongoing body of work (which is what the Ranamok is all about). It employs the widest range of skills in one piece which pushes the boundaries and embraces art-making on many levels.

Moore’s technical brilliance enables him to confidently express his unique, quirky artistic vision. This new work – which is impressive in scale – caught the imagination of the judges through its witty, layered narratives and references to museums and collecting. It provides a vie into the artist’s mind in which, in his own words he says, ‘everything is alive and curious'.
