Vanitas
Cast glass, moss
12 H x 63 W x 5 D cm
Dutch vanitas paintings were reminders of death and the fragile nature of life, as is this. It is both universal and an intensely personal work. Vanitas paintings depicted a world of seductive beauty in the incipient stages of decay. That beauty exists in my life and I watch helplessly as wasting disease invades it. The process is physical, but the disease is of the mind. Nature reacts to both.
