The Do’s and Don’ts of Packaging for the RANAMOK GLASS PRIZE
The RANAMOK GLASS PRIZE is a touring prize, so your piece/pieces will be unpacked and packed a number of times by different people of varying experience during the tour. Therefore, requirements for packaging and instructions must be of a curatorial standard.
Insurance of the work whilst on tour will be the responsibility of RANAMOK GLASS PRIZE LIMITED, provided curatorial standards of packing are met.
As an example:
DO:• use an adequately sized, light, wooden box made of plywood or MDF, using attached diagram as a guide;
• use Philips head screws of adequate length to grip the crate securely;
• insert a washer between screw head and lid of crate;
• make two handles for small to medium crates, four handles for large crates;
• make ‘skids’ for large crates;
• glue thick foam to line the box and lid, with a cut out for the piece to sit snuggly and safely inside, using minimum of 30 to 50mm of foam all round;
• ensure every aspect of your work’s safety is covered and if, in exceptional circumstances, you consider the packing of your work is unsuited to these requirements, you must agree suitable alternatives with Maureen Cahill on (+61 2) 9552 1552;
• clearly mark where box is to be opened and put marks on box and lid to show how lid properly fits back;
• ensure both the artist’s name and title of work are marked directly onto box with indelible marker;
• attach detailed instructions, to assist in the handling and setting up of your work, in an obvious spot inside the box so they are easily found. (Duplicate copy to Jo Little & Elizabeth MacDougall for inclusion in the ‘Touring Manual’ for each venue.)
DON’T:
• use cardboard boxes;
• use nails or allen key joints;
• use mitred corners in crates;
• only glue joints - they will not hold during the entire tour;
• use straw, shredded paper or organic materials as packing material
• use loose Styrofoam ‘peanuts’
• use bubble wrap and cello tape
• use chipboard anywhere that screws will be removed and replaced, (ie: lids or sides where lids are screwed down) it breaks down rapidly and doesn’t last the distance.SPECIAL CONSIDERATION:
• If your work is glued, we will require it to be packed to very careful specifications, which will involve additional packing conditions. If this is the case, contact Maureen Cahill for specific instructions.
• Due to past experiences with the use of glue, we reserve the right to decide if work that has been glued will be included in the touring exhibition.
