When Japan, a small country in the East, was developing, envoys were sent to China to seek knowledge on international affairs and culture.
The envoys returned two to three years later with new ideas and valuable skills.
This need for advanced tools and techniques outweighed the fear of losing their own traditions.

I find antique ceremonial
headdresses particularly interesting. Although they must have played an important part on special occasions, I wonder about the practicality of some of the decorations.
Imagine, a young bride hiring a
precious headdress for her wedding day. The power of the object helps to carry her through on her way to marry a man she had quite probably never met, let alone chosen as her partner for life.
